by Shane Mabutas
Pumpkins are perhaps the ultimate sign that fall has arrived. They are one of the most beloved and versatile gourds on Earth! Pumpkins are a part of the gourd family; think cucumbers, zucchini, and watermelons. This year we brought the pumpkin patch to WASNJ KG! Our vision included hands on activities and experiment to develop motor skills and social skills within our KG kids.
Pumpkins are believed to date back over 5,000 years ago within North America. Frenchmen Jacques Cartier explored the St. Lawrence region of North America and recalls finding what the French called “gros melons”, later the name would be translated into English as “pompions”, which has since evolved into the modern “pumpkin”.
Pumpkins can be used for food and recreation. Pumpkin pie has become a traditional food in North America and Canada. We can also carve pumpkins into popular “jack-o-lanterns” placing a candle inside to illuminate our creation.
Planted by farmers in early July, Pumplins require soil that holds water well. Pumpkins are rather durable and can regrow damaged vines if necessary. Pumpkins are so durable that our KG houses managed to have a wheelbarrow relay with them!
The focus of the STEAM pumpkin day was crafts, exciting physical challenges, and cooking. KG were able to show just how versatile the pumpkin is, bringing the magic of 2022 pumpkin day alive. In terms of crafts, we saw 3D shapes, jack-o-lanterns and a “magic potion pumpkin experiment”.
Meanwhile, KG1 were avidly smashing their pumpkin together to make soup and mashed pumpkin topped with cheese. We made sure that kids will know that pumpkins are flexible and could be cooked in a variety of ways.
House activities rounded off our STEAM pumpkin day for 2022. The students were split into their respective houses and had two tasks to challenge them. First, was the wheelbarrow relay, tasking students with loading their pumpkins into wheelbarrows and carrying them across the assembly area. Lastly, houses were given toothpicks and diced pumpkin to create exciting 3D shapes.
At the end of the day, the KG kids were rewarded for their hard work and effort across the STEAM pumpkin day 2022. The kids settled down to eat their creations, sharing stories about their favorite parts of the day.
by Melandi Lindeque
Welcome to a quick look into the Grade 2W classroom.
We are wrapping up our first IPC unit for the semester called Live and Let Live. Last week, we started discussing habitats. We discovered that a habitat is a place where someone or something lives. There are various types of habitats – big or small, cold or hot, on land or in water. All habitats provide animals and plants with food, water, air, and shelter.
We delved a bit deeper into two habitats, namely deserts and oceans.
We learned that a desert is a place that gets less than 25cm of rainfall per year. We learned that there are deserts on all continents on earth. Next, we looked at some animals in the desert, and we learned that a camel has very long eyelashes that protect their eyes from sandstorms, and their nostrils can close to keep the sand out.
Next, we looked at ocean habitats. We looked at some animals living in coral reefs, like different fish, sea turtles, starfish and many more.
Students created posters with differences and similarities between the two habitats, and lastly, they started planning and drawing their own ocean habitat diorama.
Students brought shoe boxes to school. We looked at some videos and examples, and then in their groups, students had to discuss, plan, and draw their dioramas.
Next, students started drawing, colouring, pasting, and creating our animals and plants. I was impressed with their creativity and willingness to help each other. Some students even collected small sticks, rocks, and leaves to use in their dioramas. Students also used clay to create and make our plants and animals colourful and bright!
We had a visit from some parents, who also jumped in and helped with our projects. Finally, students had the opportunity to tell us about their own ocean habitat.
During these two weeks of learning, we also had fun with songs and dancing that helped us learn about some animals in the ocean.Although the project was more focused on individual work, students were eager to help each other and work together – this showed their collaborative spirits. They also showcased their resiliency to keep working hard until the end of the project.
